504/508 Compliance Officer

Full Time, 37.5 hrs. @ wk. / Non-Exempt / Union / Benefit Eligible / $23.31 @ hr

BASIC FUNCTION:

Position provides consultation, information and education to faculty, staff, and students regarding general and specific needs of students with disabilities, as required by state and federal laws including but not limited to 504 and 508 compliance, and ADA requirements. Coordinates Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)/Section 504 and Section 508 program compliance, including coordination of accommodations for individuals with disabilities at the College. Works with the College to provide recommendations regarding physical plant, program and policy operations and services, informed by principles of Universal Access to support all students.  

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensure compliance with the ADA, Sections 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and other federal and state laws and regulations pertaining to persons with disabilities (ie. HUD)
  • Coordinate College policies and procedures relating to persons with disabilities and tracking college progress relating to its policies
  • Have a fair understanding of assistive technologies used by people with disabilities
  • Provide professional consultation regarding disability issues to leaders of the College’s divisions and offices
  • Lead efforts to establish Section 508 compliance policies and processes throughout the organization
  • Review documentation of disability and determine reasonable and appropriate accommodations for all students and employees with disabilities
  • Lead compliance management activities for digital services and technology covered under the Section 508 law in conjunction with IT staff
  • Assist faculty with implementation of and understanding of accommodations for each student and each course, in compliance with individual plans and ADA regulations
  • Initiate communication with faculty to discuss questions or concerns regarding the implementation of accommodations and provide guidance in determining reasonable accommodations
  • Create programming efforts on campus to increase awareness of disabilities among students to cultivate a campus climate of inclusion
  • Maintain confidential files in the college’s Student Information System on persons with self-identified disabilities
  • Serve as liaison to staff and faculty in the handling of accommodations
  • Maintain up-to-date researched information on effective services at other institutions for students with disabilities
  • Assess the ongoing needs of students with disabilities
  • Develop initiatives to further enhance services provided
  • Screen, accept, or deny accommodation requests based on appropriate documentation and/or the request’s impact on the fundamental and essential elements of the course or degree requirements
  • Work with faculty to identify essential elements of degrees to evaluate requests for adjustments/accommodations
  • Document office processes and maintain current records
  • Responsible for securing assistive devices, aids, and equipment
  • Keep current information regarding disabilities services for students; to include web sites, printed material, student handbooks, etc.
  • Provide bi-annual reports to the dean regarding students served, needs, policy updates, and equipment or services recommendations
  • Establish tracking procedures to document agency successes and remediation efforts for Section 508 compliance
  • Secure outside contractors for services that are unavailable on campus; such as interpreting
  • Stay abreast of laws, guidelines, and recent Office of Civil Rights/court rulings, to ensure quality service and compliance provisions
  • participate in professional development activities to stay current with improved methods of service delivery and new technology and aids
  • Other duties as assigned.

Supervision is received from the Assistant Dean of Community Life

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, social behavioral science, instructional technology, special education, or counseling or other job-related field required; licensure in related field preferred 
  • Knowledge of best practices of data collection and analysis
  • Knowledge of Google Suites, Canvas and Student Information Systems- or other relevant CRM/Student Information Systems/LMS 
  • Two to three years of experience in disabilities services, counseling or a related field, with strong preference  given to candidates with experience in a college or university setting  
  • Current knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Section 508 and the  application of those and related laws  
  • Strong planning and problem solving skills  
  • Effective and positive online communication skills 
  • Demonstrated effectiveness with diverse groups and persons with disabilities  
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information  
  • Ability to make administrative/procedural decisions and judgments  
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills, excellent written and oral facility, and the ability to work  effectively with a wide range of constituencies in an academic community that values diversity and access to  higher education  
  • Knowledge and understanding of a range of academic and student life issues in a low residency or online, progressive education setting preferred.
